Century-old, Carnac Bridge in South Mumbai closed for demolition; Check traffic diversions here

The bridge was declared unsafe by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay experts in 2018.

Given its dilapidated structure, Carnac Bridge in South Mumbai which was built during the British era, nearly 150 years ago will be demolished. The bridge is located between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Masjid Bunder railway stations and is a crucial east-west corridor between P D’Mello Road and Manish Road below the JJ flyover.

Owing to the demolition work, Mumbai traffic police have released diversion catering to smooth and hassle-free commute. Read on to know about vehicular diversions:

Diversions in South Mumbai following Carnac Bridge demolition 

For Vehicles moving towards Chakala Junction

  • All vehicles coming from PD’Mello Road towards the Chakala junction are diverted to the Avtarsing Bedi chowk and further towards the CST junction.

  • All vehicles going to the Chakala junction can also use YM Road before Carnac Bunder and proceed to the Chakala junction via Mohammed Ali Road

  • All vehicles can also move through Wadibunder junction and proceed to the Chakala junction via SVP Road and Mohammed Ali Road.

For vehicles moving towards PD’ Mello Road

  • Traffic coming towards PD’ Mello Road from the Chakala junction is diverted to the CST junction– Avtarsingh Bedi chowk–PD’ Mello Road via the Himalaya junction.

  • All vehicles can move through the Chakala junction and proceed towards PD’ Mello Road via Mohammed Ali Road and YM Road.

For vehicle movement on Yusuf Meher Ali Road (YM Road)

  • The one-way road will be open for southbound traffic from 7 am to 11 am and on the northbound stretch, it will be open from 4 pm to 9 pm.

  • Reportedly, no parking will be available on PD’ Mello Road, SVP Road, YM Road, Mohamed Ali Road, Pohamal junction south and in the northbound direction to the Himalaya junction.

Diversions for traffic coming to and from the Pohmal junction

Northbound traffic coming from the Pohmal junction towards PD’ Mello Road from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM will remain closed.

  • These vehicles will proceed to their destination via Mohammed Ali Road–Himalaya junction-CST junction–Avtar Singh Bedi chowk. Also, the vehicles will proceed via Mohammed Ali Road, taking a right turn at the Bhendi Bazar junction, and taking a left at the SVP Road-Wadibundar junction to PD’ Mello Road.

Southbound traffic from Kundanlal Kata towards the Pohmal junction will be closed from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

  • These vehicles can take a right turn from the Wadibundar junction–SVP Road–CST junction and take a left turn at the Bhendi Bazar junction–Mohamed Ali Road. Traffic going to the Pohmal junction from PD’ Mello Road can take a right turn at Kundanlal Kata and proceed via the Avtar Singh Bedi chowk–CST junction and take a left turn on LT Road-Mohamed Ali Road.

In 2018, the British-era bridge was declared unsafe by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay experts. In April 2022, the central railway sought permission to stop vehicular movement and demolish the bridge. Reportedly, Mumbai Railways also flagged the bridge as unsafe.
