Following a dry June, July has showered Mumbai with heavy rains! The city went from a 35% rain deficit in June to a surplus of nearly 50% in July. As per data furnished by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Maharashtra (barring Hingoli), has received above-average rainfall in July, providing much-needed relief after the June shortfall.

Moreover, Mumbai also saw its second wettest July on record this year, with water levels in the seven lakes supplying Mumbai rising to 58% of capacity.

Monsoon has significantly improved lake levels

Santacruz recorded over 1,706 mm of rain this month alone, making it the second wettest July in a decade for the area. Heavy showers between July 7-8, along with consistent downpours throughout the month, have pushed Santacruz’s monsoon total to 2,053 mm, which is 89% of its annual average. This follows last year's record-breaking 1,771 mm, making 2023 the wettest July in a decade for Santacruz.

Colaba also experienced its wettest July since 2014, with 1,402 mm of rain. Meanwhile, the monsoon has significantly improved lake levels, which have now risen to 77.31%, equating to nearly 11.17 lakh million litres.

After a month of heavy downpours, Mumbai received light rainfall in the last week of July. However, with a Yellow Alert in place for possible heavy rains starting August 1 and an Orange Alert for the weekends, Mumbai's monsoon is expected to continue.
