Mumbai's iconic Mahalaxmi Racecourse to soon transform into a theme park; check features HERE
The proposal to turn Mumbai's iconic Mahalaxmi Racecourse into a theme park has received approval from members of the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC), making it a noteworthy development. The plan of the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was approved by 540 members out of 708, after a two-day voting session.
Parking lots, jogging trails, etc. to be set up
Known for its restricted land availability, the Mahalaxmi Racecourse, spanning 211 acres, has long been a prominent green oasis in the city. Since 1914, RWITC has leased the land, which is jointly owned by the state government and the BMC. The racecourse continued to operate after the lease expired in 2013, but it was not renewed for more than ten years.
The civic authorities proposed a lease renewal in January 2024, subject to their acquisition of the majority of the land parcel. The plan put forth by BMC states that the Government will take over about 120 acres, leaving RWITC in charge of 91 acres. RWITC Chairman mentioned that the 91-acre section will still contain racetracks, a helipad, a Grade II-B heritage grandstand, and some horse stables. The remaining 120 acres will be used for parking lots, jogging trails, stables, and will also include a lawn area.
