India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Mumbai today, signalling more heavy downpours. Following the rain that lashed Mumbai yesterday evening, the streets were left submerged, and daily life came to a standstill. Meanwhile, a Red Alert was issued that remained in effect until 8:30 am today.

Heavy rainfall disrupts daily life in Mumbai

Mumbai is facing significant disruptions as heavy rainfall continues to impact daily activities across the city. The continuous rainfall has resulted in flooded roads, causing traffic congestion and diversions. In visuals captured around the city, long lines of vehicles can be seen inching forward, leaving commuters frustrated and delayed.

Flight Disruptions

The inclement weather has also affected air travel, with several flights diverted due to the heavy rains. Airlines such as SpiceJet, IndiGo, and Vistara have taken to X to inform passengers of the situation.

SpiceJet announced, “Due to bad weather (heavy rain) in Mumbai (BOM), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may get affected.”

Similarly, IndiGo said “It’s raining in #Mumbai & flight schedules are impacted. If you or your loved ones are travelling, you may keep a tab on the flight status https://bit.ly/3DNYJqj and allow ample travel time to the airport.”

Metro Chaos

Mumbai Metro stations have become increasingly crowded. Reports of stampede-like situations have emerged from various locations, underscoring the challenges faced by commuters seeking an alternative to the roadways. Reports indicate that heavy rainfall yesterday has resulted in loss of life too.

Schools and colleges closed!

In light of IMD’s Alert for Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced the closure of schools and colleges for the day on September 26, prioritising the safety of students.

Further, BMC urges all Mumbaikars to venture out only when absolutely necessary.
