Sixteen years ago, Mumbai witnessed one of the darkest chapters in its history. The 26/11 terror attacks shook the nation to its core, claiming 166 lives and leaving over 300 injured. The city stood still as brave souls—both in uniform and out—fought back against unthinkable odds.

From courageous officers and commandos who risked their lives to protect others, to the unsung heroes like the five remarkable canine warriors— Prince, Max, Tiger, Sultan, and Caesar— everyone played a pivotal role in saving lives and beyond.

Four paws, endless courage—

While much has been written about the human heroes, a special tribute belongs to four remarkable canine warriors who played a crucial role in the aftermath of the attacks. Prince, Max, Tiger, Sultan, and Caesar- sniffer dogs from Mumbai Police's Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad, became unsung heroes whose extraordinary sense of detection saved countless lives.

Max, the most celebrated of the five, was instrumental in detecting 8 kg of RDX, 25 grenades, and critical explosives during the attacks. Prince, with his sharp instincts, helped detect 17 hand grenades and four live bombs. Caesar's heroism was equally remarkable, discovering hand grenades at the CSMT railway station and critical explosives at the Taj Hotel premises. Sultan helped locate RDX and explosives, while Tiger detected bombs in the Colaba area, tirelessly aiding his team.

These four-legged heroes worked tirelessly, risking their lives to ensure the safety of Mumbai's citizens. Their service extended beyond 26/11, as they participated in operations during the 2006 Train Blasts and 2011 Zaveri Bazaar Blasts as well.

Their bond was as remarkable as their service. After years of dedicated work, they retired together in 2015, living out their final days in companionship. Their loyalty extended beyond their working years, with the dogs mourning each other's loss with a depth of emotion that touched many hearts.

Honouring Bravehearts of 26/11 and pawsome protectors

As we reflect on the tragic events of 26/11, it is essential to honour the brave souls who stood tall in the face of terror. Heroes like Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, Hemant Karkare, Ashok Kamte, and Vijay Salaskar exemplified unparalleled courage and selflessness, sacrificing their lives to protect others. Alongside them, we also salute our four-legged warriors— Prince, Max, Tiger, Sultan, and Caesar—whose sharp instincts and unwavering dedication saved countless lives and averted greater tragedy.

These heroes, both human and canine, remind us that bravery comes in many forms. Today, 16 years later, we remember and honour their legacy, carrying forward their stories as a reminder of the strength and unity that defines us as a nation.
